How Bad Could It Get?

Benjamin Netanyahu is in trouble at home if this war ends soon, so he has three clear objectives.

1. Crush Hamas and destroy the Palestinian Territory (buildings and infrastructure). Disincentivizing a two-state solution helps him politically.

2. He wants to hurt Joe Biden and help Donald Trump. Being an authoritarian himself, Netanyahu wants Trump as an ally.

3. Help other Authoritarians. A wider war in the Middle East helps Russia (by helping the GOP divert focus and $ from Ukraine). An authoritarian in Israel could ultimately result in major tension between Israel and the US, diminishing the US’s sway in the Middle East. Of course, how all that works out depends on who wins the election in November.

Benjamin Netanyahu would have no problem joining forces with Dictators like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Viktor Orbán. All would benefit greatly from a Trump victory.

If the US ultimately has to attack Iran to protect the Israel people, Russia (as an Ally of Iran) could use that as an excuse to attack US forces near Ukraine. That could trigger NATO’s article 5, drawing the NATO allies into the conflict.

It’s hard to see how that doesn’t lead to a world conflict. We’ve been building towards that for decades now.

Putin would much rather draw the world into WWIII than suffer an embarrassing defeat in Ukraine. Such a defeat would probably end his rule in Russia, and he knows that.

As Russia’s economy suffers and it depletes its conventional weapon stockpiles, it’s left with only bad options.

Creating an excuse to use nuclear weapons would be one of those bad options.

China is the wildcard. If the war expands and China decides to get involved, the Doomsday clock, (currently at 90 seconds before midnight), starts ticking.

Let’s hope President Biden is able to navigate these troubled times.

I don’t have the words to adequately convey to you how pleased I am that Joe Biden is our President right now, or how important it is that he remains our President after the November election.
